Kupjansk in the Kharkiv region has experienced both occupation and liberation. The city is located directly on the front line in eastern Ukraine. Russian troops captured Kupjansk in the early days of the full-scale war against Ukraine in February 2022. Due to its important railway junction, the city was a significant logistical center for the Russians.
Kupiansk is situated 120 kilometers from Kharkiv, a city that has endured severe shelling and bombing since the onset of Russian aggression. The city, home to over 25,000 residents, is intersected by the Russian gas pipeline.
In the initial days of the full-scale invasion, Kupiansk's Mayor, Hennadii Matsehora, negotiated with Russian forces, allowing them to enter the city without resistance. He claimed that the Russian battalion commander presented him with an ultimatum: either surrender the city or face a storming.
The occupiers shut down Ukrainian television and caused communication disruptions. By early April, telephone communication in Kupiansk had completely ceased, making it nearly impossible to obtain information from the occupied city.
On September 9, 2022, the Ukrainian military liberated Kupiansk from Russian occupation, along with other cities and villages in Kharkiv oblast. Despite being under Ukrainian control for several weeks, shelling persists due to the city's proximity to the Russian border, just 50 kilometers away. Ukrainian authorities are reestablishing governance in the city, with law enforcement officers documenting Russian offenses and apprehending collaborators.
